HazelPut a Christmas quilt in the closet over one eight-point block that never lined up
A note from Hazel

Why I made this

It was a quiet evening in November, the iron ticking as it cooled. I had a Christmas quilt on the table and one block that was wrong. Eight points, and the center would not close. I had already unpicked that seam three times.

I did what you have probably done. I pressed the seams the other way. I trimmed a hair off every wedge. I tried a new pin and a slower needle. The points still slid past each other by an eighth of an inch, which is all it takes to see it from across the room. In the end I folded the quilt into the closet, and that is where it stayed.

The next December I was cutting scallops for a table topper, and I stacked two of them, one half on top of the other. For a second it looked like a fir branch. Nothing was pieced and nothing had to meet. The shape came from the overlap, and the overlap forgave me. That block was never a skill problem. It was a pieced-points problem.

If you have a Christmas quilt in a closet because one block would not close, you did not fail at quilting. You were handed a design that asked for the one thing fabric does not do: line up perfectly.

So I drew a tree out of arcs: scalloped tiers, widest at the bottom, each one laid over the one below it, with a trunk and a poinsettia appliqued on top. I called it The Stacked-Arc Method, and I printed every template at full size so there is nothing to scale by guesswork.

I made it for my own wall first. This is the full pattern, laid out so you can print it tonight, cut a tier, and see the tree appear.

STACK MY FIRST ARC
The big idea

The Stacked-Arc Method

The tree is never pieced. It appears when the arcs overlap.

What most people believe

A Christmas tree quilt has to be pieced, so a single point that won't meet means you are not good enough for it.

What changes it

The points were never the job. Stack scalloped arcs on top of each other and the tree shows up in the overlap, with nothing left to line up.

Christmas Tree Wall Hanging — PDF Quilt & Appliqué Pattern

Layered scalloped tiers · Central poinsettia appliqué · Full-size templates · A4 and US Letter

Eight tiers, each a simple arc. With The Stacked-Arc Method, you overlap the tiers to form the tree instead of piecing pointed blocks. The map shows which tier goes where.

Choose raw-edge, turned-edge or fusible appliqué for the poinsettia. The instructions cover all three methods.
